Meeting NYOSHUL KHENPO RINPOCH

Meeting NYOSHUL KHENPO RINPOCHE

I FIRST SAW THE GREAT DZOGCHEN MASTER NYOSHUL KHENPO RINPOCHE IN 1984. He was sitting in a garden outside Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's home in Dordogne, gazing into the blue above. Rinpoche had an air of bliss and stillness, and I remember thinking he looked as if he were master of the sky.

One night, there was a dinner gathering at our small stone farmhouse, and Rinpoche honored us by attending. Fortunate as the occasion was, I remember that evening with some embarrassment. None of the guests at the table spoke fluent English, and we were at a loss as to how to entertain Rinpoche, so after dinner we asked my teenage daughter to sing for him. She reluctantly brought out her guitar and played the one melody she remembered the words to a ballad about a prostitute called "House of the Rising Sun." I listened with the blood rushing to my face as she crooned the song, lamenting the miseries of life in a brothel. I was the only discomfited listener; Khen Rinpoche knew no English and seemed to enjoy the performance. When I later asked my daughter, "How could you have sung that song?" she answered, "You mean the one about the sun?"

I next encountered Rinpoche a year later, shortly after our return to California. We were living in a tiny vacation rental dwarfed by the expansive Pacific Ocean out front. The house was not more than twelve feet wide, with plywood walls, a galley kitchen and two closet-sized bedrooms up-stairs. A friend from a local Buddhist center called one day and asked that we host Rinpoche, since all the rental houses in the area were filled. So, to our good fortune, Khen Rinpoche and his wife, Khandro Damcho, ended up staying with us for a few weeks in that boxcar by the sea.

Rinpoche enjoyed taking walks along the ocean, and we would often follow. He spoke little, but would gesture up to the empty cerulean heaven, breathing it in deeply and urging us to do the same. Walking with Rinpoche felt like stepping right into the clear sky. He communicated to the world with his poetic speech, graceful gestures and quiet eyes. Each person he met he greeted as a beloved friend, instantly opening the hearts of all who saw him.

During those weeks, I asked Rinpoche if he would give a teaching for this book. He asked that I use one of his poems or letters instead, and I chose a missive he wrote to his disciples in 1981. This is only one of the many beautiful poems that the illustrious Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche left as part of his legacy. The profound teachings, poems and kindness of this great master of Dzog-chen live on for us all.
