Reflections

Serena Yang

It has been such a privilege to be learning at the British Council with all the wonderful trainers here and the highly motivated English teachers from different schools in Taipei (Well, who will want to spend their vacation in the classroom plus doing homework?!). Starting from Day 1, the fun in the class has caught everyone’s eyes, and the focus on authentic communication continued to Day 7 with non-stop games and activities. Individual, pair, and group works were well designed, with stirrers and settlers nicely inserted, making a friendly CLIL plus TBL environment for us to be absorbed in and absorbing.

From time to time, I reconfirmed with my experiences for the things described in the class that I’ve used and being useful, and also those known before or newly introduced and never used before. How would I modify and apply them to my classroom? Would it be suitable if I apply something to my lower level learners? How about the high level ones? What are the extra tasks for them to complete when they’re waiting for others? These questions were often haunting around my head during the class. I had to justify my way of teachings the kids before, and now I have the chance to rectify the usual problem in the class and make it better in the sense of an authentic communication.

In fact, the most fun part was being involved in the activities with our peers, and while we were exchanging ideas about our teaching experiences. The variety of resources on the BC LearnEnglish Kids website and information shared among us also made this training course so valuable and unique. Songs and chants were short and sweet, whereas the story reading and retelling/re-creating were long but interesting. I personally most enjoyed the “Back to the Board” time, as we managed to make efforts as a team to win the points (how seldom could we work as a team at school!), and that was more exciting and rewarding than watching the FIFA!

I believe that my future students will definitely benefit a lot from the course I’ve engaged here at BC since I’m now armed with confidence and packed with ideas. Also, I will certainly provide them with more opportunities to speak and write in an active way instead of listen and repeat or just copy from the board in a passive way. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and skillful, and most of all, creative and responsive: what are these words for? Can you make a guess? The answer is: it’s the me-to-become, as I’ve seen these great qualities from our instructors that I’m aspiring to be like them! Thank you all so much, Adam, Mark, and of course, Steven!! Yeah!!
