If we want to develop continuous, vast love that is not affected by temporary circumstances, we have to create faith, since actual love comes from faith. Ordinary love that is not connected to faith depends on the changeable reactions of others, decreasing or increasing according to how it is rewarded and capable of turning into hatred or indifference. This kind of love has expectation and is not truly giving. Ordinary, nihilist love always eventually causes regret because it expects an ordinary, tangible reaction, going from one expression to another expression and from one substantial form to another substantial form. Even when others respond to our ordinary love for them in the way we wish, their response can never be ultimately fulfilling to us. Although others may want us to love them in a particular way, we may give them another form of love that is not what they want. Then, even though we give love to others with positive energy and kindness, it may create a negative reaction from them since it does not take the particular form they desired. Instead of increasing love, our love for others may cause frustration and an opposite reaction of unkindness, since all qualities in samsara have the potential to turn into their opposite. Because there is never any lasting, matching connection in ordinary love due to previous karmic imbalances, it eventually causes dissatisfaction, unhappiness, and depression and leaves us caught between our hopes and disillusionments.

如果我們想要培養不受暫時緣境影響的持續大愛,就必須建立信心,因為真實的愛來自信心。未與信心連結的凡俗之愛有賴於他人多變的反應,隨著他人回饋的方式而增減,而且有可能轉變為憎恨或漠然。這樣的愛有期待,並非真的給予。世俗的、斷見(虛無主義者)之愛最終總會造成後悔,因為它預期有個世俗、實質的反應,可能是各種表達及各類具體形式。即使他人以我們所希望的方式,回應我們對他們的世俗之愛,他們的回應也絕不會在究竟上滿足我們。雖然他們可能希望我們以某個特定方式愛他們,我們給他們的愛卻可能是另一種他們所不要的形式。如此一來,即使我們以正能量與仁善來愛他們,由於不是他們所希求的特定形式,他們也可能會給予負面反應。我們非但沒有讓愛增長,反而對他人造成挫敗,還接收到不仁善的相違反應,因為輪迴裡一切的性質都有可能轉變為與其相違的性質(違品)。由於先前的業力失衡,凡俗之愛永遠不會有任何持久、相契的連結,因而最終會造成不滿、不悅與沮喪,讓我們困在自己的希望與幻滅之間。

 

The compassionate, giving love of sublime beings is always without expectation, never causes regret, and always connects to us since it is unceasing. Through previous karmic obscurations, we may not recognize this actual continuous love. But without doubting, if we try with deep faith to increase the source of this love, which is the unconditioned awareness of our own wisdom mind, love arises naturally.

聖者們的悲心、施予之愛向來不帶著期望,絕對不會造成後悔,並且總是與我們連結,因為它不會止息。因先前的業力遮障,我們可能不會認出這種真正的相續之愛。但毋庸置疑的是,如果我們試著以深厚的信心增長此愛的泉源——也就是我們自身智慧心的不依緣覺性,愛就會自然生起。

 

Sometimes practitioners with high realization who are filled with great love for others as a result of the strength of their practice seem to act outrageously and carelessly because they have no attachment to worldly phenomena or consideration of social customs. This is not the same as ordinary people who act outrageously. Although these ordinary people do not seem to care about what others think or expect, they are in fact very concerned with their own well-being and will feel unhappy when they have negative circumstances. In contrast, actual practitioners who have gone beyond ordinary phenomena become extremely careless about themselves, but care deeply about others. They are no longer seriously affected by circumstances since their own pure phenomena are so much more powerful from wisdom awareness. By this blessing, their activity benefits others naturally. The spontaneous activity of enlightened mind is completely beyond dualistic understanding but always manifests with the essence of this great compassion.

有時,由於修行的力量,悟境高的修行者對他人充滿大愛,而他們的行為似乎肆無忌憚、輕率隨便,那是因為他們不執著世俗現象,或不考慮社會習俗。這與凡夫做事肆無忌憚並不相同。雖然這些凡夫似乎不在意他人的想法或期待,事實上他們卻非常關注自身的福祉,而且當他們遭逢違緣時,便感覺相當不悅。相反地,已超越世俗現象的真實修行者會變得極不在意自己,卻深切關心他人。他們不再受緣境的大力影響,因為他們從智慧覺性而來的清淨現象更為強而有力得多。藉此加持,他們的事業自然能利益其他眾生。證悟之心的任運事業完全超越了二元理解,而一直以此大悲體性而顯現。

 

It is necessary for us to create an object of love through the great wisdom cynosure of sublime beings' presence. Then, we can make the wonder of spiritual qualities blossom through faith, including the incomparable love of compassion. By becoming the same as the Buddhas through their blessing, many beings will be drawn to our love-giving qualities, just as bees hover around the sweet-smelling scent of a lotus although the lotus itself has no idea or wish to attract bees. Even though growing from samsara's mud, the lotus is unobscured and unaffected by it, opening its perfumed petals and giving its fragrance without expectation. When love is interwoven with faith, it is a manifestation of spiritual energy that benefits other sentient beings and is a natural offering to sublime beings. As it is said:

我們必須透過聖者所呈現的大智慧指標人物來建立一個愛的對象。然後,透過信心,便能讓修行功德的善妙綻放,而其中包含了無與倫比的悲心之愛。我們藉諸佛加持而變得與他們一樣,許多眾生就會因我們慈愛且施予的功德所吸引,正如蜜蜂在芳香的蓮花周圍徘徊飛翔,儘管蓮花本身並未打算或期望吸引蜜蜂。蓮花即便生長在輪迴的污泥中,也不會受其遮障或影響,依然展開芬芳的花瓣,並且不帶期望地散發香氣。當愛與信心交織,它即是修行能量的顯現,利益著其他有情眾生,並且自然而然地成為對聖者的供養。正如所說:

There is no method to make Buddhas happy

Other than to satisfy all beings.

使佛悅意無他法,

唯令眾生皆意足。

 

As Rigdzin Jigmed Lingpa said in one of his prayers: Whatever brings benefit to sentient beings brings benefit to the Victorious Ones. So therefore, as Buddha said, 'I myself and all sentient beings share the same suffering and happiness.' Through this quality of the true nature of sublime beings, may you protect beings from suffering.

正如持明吉美林巴在一則祈願文中說道:

任何能利益有情眾生的,都會使勝者獲得利益。故而如佛所言:「我與一切有情眾生共享相同的痛苦與快樂。」透過聖者們真實自性的功德,願你能護佑眾生離苦。

 

By hearing and believing in Buddha's speech and practicing with deep faith, pure and continuous love can increase until it is unaffected by any ordinary attachment. Through the wisdom of discernment which arises from faith, all phenomena can be understood distinctly, so that what is not actual love and what is actual love become clearly known. Whatever is known through the nongrasping wisdom of discernment never causes any negativity toward other beings or any self-hatred because it is inseparable from the emanation of great kindness. Through the qualities of the interdependence of phenomena that arise, the power of the energy of this love connects to others and can extend to many beings. Vajrayana practitioners are especially able to develop love that is independent of external phenomena by transforming all beings and circumstances into immeasurable, loving deity phenomena through visualization and determined mind. Because of the influence of stainless wisdom, these practitioners have no expectation of obvious, ordinary, dualistic love from others since they are already complete with nondual, desireless love that does not grasp at self or others.

透過聽聞並信奉佛陀的法語,並以深厚的信心修持教法,可以增長清淨的相續之愛,直到它不受任何世俗執著的影響。透過依信心所來的妙觀察智,能清晰了解一切現象,而能清楚了知何為真實之愛、何非真實之愛。經由無執之妙觀察智所了知的一切,絕不會對其他眾生造成惡事或帶來自我仇恨,因為其不離於大悲心的化現。透過現象之相依緣起的功德,這種愛的力量便可連結到他人,並能延伸到很多眾生。金剛乘修行者尤其能建立不依外在現象之愛,方法是透過觀想和堅定的心,把一切眾生和緣境轉化為無量、慈愛之本尊的現象。由於無垢智慧之力,這些修行者並不期待其他眾生[回饋任何]顯著、世俗、二元分別之愛,因為他們已達致不執取自他的無二、無欲之愛。

 

When the limited love of previous nihilist habit expands into the great kindness of Bodhisattva's munificent love, it is unendingly compassionate even when extended to all beings, giving positive energy to them whether or not anything is received in return. This great love comes from the faith which connects us to the blessings of sublime beings' wisdom mind so that everything, including love and faith, becomes deep and pure. Then ultimately, without any expectation, conditions, or intention, love becomes the unobstructed emanation of the limitless, aimless, natural love of the great compassion of enlightenment.

當過往斷見習氣的有限之愛擴展為菩薩寬宏之愛的大慈時,那便是無盡之悲,甚至當它延伸到所有眾生時,都會給予正能量而無論是否得到回報。此大愛來自信心,那份將我們與聖者智慧心之加持相連的信心,以致所有一切,包含愛與信心,都能變得深沉而純淨。那麼最終,不帶任何期望、條件或意圖,愛就會轉變成菩提大悲此無侷限、無目的、自然之愛的無礙化現。
