Meeting

KYABJE DILGO KHYENTSE RINPOCHE

THE MOMENT I SAW HIS HOLINESS DILGO KHYENTSE RINPOCHE, I was mesmerized by his hands, as many other students must have been. He had long, elegant fingers that moved expressively when he taught, a constant mudra of the divine. His voice was an unearthly rumble, his speech a continuously flowing river of the buddhas' sounds, his gaze all-seeing. For someone new to the dharma as I was, his extraordinary and holy appearance was indefinable, almost too much to absorb.

Students from all over the world journeyed to his monastery in Boudhanath to sit before this great guru and pray or receive his blessings. Masters from all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and thousands of disciples came to him for teachings. Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, whose cease-less dharma activity filled the world with an ineffable radiance, was one of the most illustrious Dzogchen masters of the Nyingma lineage. In addition to discovering many termas, and giving countless teachings and initiations, during his lifetime Rinpoche wrote twenty-three volumes of scholarly texts and commentaries. Amazingly, he always seemed to have time for each one of his many devotees.

We stayed near his monastery in Nepal for many years and, in 1984, moved to the Dordogne region of France, where a small Buddhist community was developing near the famous prehistoric caves of Lascaux. His Holiness was teaching there at the time. The scenery in Dordogne is breath-taking in the spring, and when we arrived, the meadows were filled with yellow and fuchsia wild flowers swaying in the breeze under endless skies. Ancient castles were hidden from the road by tall birch trees, their silver trunks shimmering in early morning light. Dordogne seemed like the loveliest place on earth, with beauty greeting the eyes at every turn.

We settled in an old stone farmhouse on property being renovated for eventual use as a three-year retreat compound. Before we could unpack, the large snake that had taken up residence in the house had to be evicted. It zipped across the kitchen floor, into cabinets, over and under the beds. The previous tenants had lived quite happily with the snake, but my children wanted more privacy. It took four men nearly six hours to chase it out of the house.

Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's home was not far, and every day a group of us would walk the short distance to La Sonnerie, where he was tirelessly conducting teachings and initiations. He would begin early in the morning and continue late into the evening, yet over several post-dawn sessions, he kindly made time to give a teaching for this book. On the last day, His Holiness placed his enormous hand over the top of my head, murmuring one of his constant blessings, and told me to return next year. His hallowed and miraculous voice never leaves my memory.
